having hard time syncing timing

i cant seem to sync timing. i set the base to 16.5 and table to 16.5 but it the screen just flashes \"ignition lock 16.5\" and doesnt let me do anything else. it stays like that for minutes. the distributor is adjusted to 16.5 so i dont see the reason for it not to sync. ???

once you select sync timing you are supposed to physically go outside and move the distributor. once you are done you end the sync timing......its not fully automatic if that is what you are thinking. the sync timing feature just disables all the ignition corrections so you can properly set your base timing.
