ignition brake up

went to the track today and had a hard time trying to making a clean pass....again. it started Friday night and i was told it was the spark plugs do to me getting on the rev limiter with the e85. i swapped in new ngk 4554's on the way to the track and when i got on it broke up bad from 6.3-6.4k and up. gap was at .026. came to the track and barrowed some ngk 3330's gapped at .028 and still broke up like a mofo. disabled ELD[because i got a weird CEL few days ago] made three 3rd-4th gear pulls w/o any brake up. i ended gapping them as low as .023. first run, i got a clean 1-3 but at the top of 4th it broke up ~6.5k again. still ran a 12.9@102. :) after that every run i got a clean 1-2 but 3rd gear would start cutting out at around 7k and the 4th would cut out at about 6.5k. car is running nice and rich, i pulled 1.25* of timing from 6.5k. pulled another .75* at the same place but it broke up even worst. anyone have a clue as to what could be causing this ? this a new dizzy that i got about a week ago, ran fine and all but im gonna swap out the coil and see if that does anything.

Give us some more info abut your setup. It seems to me that you are probably running a bit too rich with too much timing being pulled. If it feels like a light pop thats probably what it is. If it is more violent then that I would be looking elsewhere (You could also have a weak coil etc).

sorry, set up is a stock b16a/aebs IM/pte 1k's/255lph pump/cast mani/holset he351cw@~12psi. no, this is no light pop. it almost sounds the same as if you were hitting your normal rev limiter with ignition cut only. ill replace the coil later today.

How much timing do you have in it?? at that hp level you shouldn't need to gap your plugs down that small unless its a very weak coil, BUT i am betting that you DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH timing in it. its probably some of the fuel burning in the exhaust. How do your plugs look?? If you want email me your map ,and i'll check it out for you. [email protected]

I just seen your map in the calibrations file, YOU DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH timing. You should be closer to 17degrees at at 12lbs, also the jump in timing from 6500-7000 is kinda weird, my number is on the tuners page so if you want some more help please feel free to give me a call.

thanks for the help. i'd post my cal in here if it didnt look like shit from me messing with it all the time yesterday. ill go out wed. or thur and clean it up some. to clarify some things, that map you saw is from my old setup. i added some timing when i was at the dyno. graph was a little jumpy at the top end and adding timing made it nice and flat. on this setup im running nearly the same timing numbers. so its no higher then 16.75* anywhere around 12psi. plugs look like im running lean but i think thats do to the ignition cutting out. :?: im dead tired right now, so the car will have to wait until tomorrow. -EDIT- timing is setup up like this; p30 map, step retard 0 - 3 = .25* 3 - 5 = .50* 5 - 7 = 1.0* 7 - 12 = 1.0* 12+ = 1.0*

So are you still on e85? Can you post up a quick screen shot of your high cam timing map for us if you dont want to post up the file?

I would definitely be moving that timing up. With e85 and 12 psi on a stock b16 I usually start at around 20 degrees and work my way up from there. Thats about a .5 degree per pound retard or so. the 13 degrees you have now is way too low.

im sure it is but wouldnt it have done this all the time ? ill try adding 1-2* and see if that helps any. i remember when i tuned it the first time on e85 the timing mark on the plugs seemed to be right in the middle. maybe a few degrees retarded but nothing to terrible. :?

have you checked the condition of the engine??(ie compression or leakdown test??) IS it doing the break up during vtec crossover?? if so you might want to check yout oil pressure?? If it ran fine after the dyno before then it shouldn't do it now, something else changed, so the tune wouldn't be the problem.

i did a comp test 2weeks ago i think. and thats when my dizzy died. i got a new one. [new as in one that works] and the car started up and ran with out any issues until last friday night. only thing that changed was: 4gal of gas, ngk plug wires and thats about it i think. and no on the brakeup at vtec crossover. engagement point is set at 5.3k. i filled up 10gal yesterday and i jst need to find some time to go out of town where i can get on it and see if it still does it to rule out bad gas. i also put in the old plug wires yesterday. ill let you guys know how it goes. in the mean time anyone have any other ideas ? calvin, when i got that cel for ELD it only showed up on my laptop and not on my cluster, is that normal ?

from what i understand E85 varies in content alot, i've seen octane ratings vary alot, maybe a bad tank gas, wouldn't be the first time i've seen that, either the dizzys junk or bad gas, all i cant think of to check, also check to make sure the rotors tight
