ok i have a built d series. eagle rods, vitara setup with arp head studs and 1000cc's. i had the timing retard at 1.25 per lb and the head was lifting bad you could hear it. i moved it to 1.75 and it fixed alittle. so my question is what is to far on the timing retard and what do you guys normally set the timing on a d running 22+ lbs on a 57 trim with .63 ar. and do you normally retorque the head studs i never did after doing 60 ft lbs loosening then retorquing to 60 ft lbs again i thought that stretched em any help would be great.oh yea d16y7 with y8 head, thanks

if you've already lifted the head, then you need to pull it off, put a new gasket and retourque.. ARPs need to be TQed to like 70-85 LBS.. I usually go about 80.. 60 is just not enough.. Your timing is not causing the head to lift.. 1.25 per lb should be plenty retard, I think your issue is the 60ft lbs.. You need to go at least 70 to fully stretch the head studs, and I'd go 80 just to be sure..

Burgermass is right, We just went though this on a vitara setup. Head would lift because the owner didn't tq it down enough. We tq them in 10lb increments all the way to 85lbs. It sucks to deal with a head that lifts, and like he said once it lifts you have to replace the hg. I like to use copper gasket spray on the gasket and moly lube on the threads of the studs.

Man, I have been through this with the Y8 head so I feel your pain!!!! Are you using the D16Z6(p28) timing tables or the p2p(D16Y8)? If your using the Z6 STOP and use the Y8. Also Disable ignition corrections under boost. With the D16 head studs i have found success by heat cycling them a few times then setting them to 75ft/lbs

ok man thanks

THANKS GUYS yea i am usind the p2p y8 maps. well that sucks i gotta replace a brand new head gasket. lol but i will do that and hopefully it goes away. would the head lifting cause the lower radiator hose to collapse and suck all the fluid and air out of it to.

This sounds like headbolt tq issue to me. The vitara's really ilke alot of timing compared to a normal d series. post a screenshot of your timing maps

call me stupid

That's true. It scared me how much timing one of our vitara builds soaked up on race gas. Its running 8.5 degrees at 32 psi. I kept checking plugs, no specs and we pulled the head off after a bunch of track passes and the pistons look mint. On the dyno I really think it would have taken more timing but I didn't want to push it. First pass out it got down however, trapped over 103 in the 1/8 and picked up 35mph in the big end. Pretty decent for a car with only 4k invested.
